The marble quarries
The marble quarries are the main source of income of the community of Vagli, an example of how nature and human work can coexist in harmony.
Marble exploitation in this area goes back a long way indeed, marble has been used to make ornaments for churches and houses forever.
The techniques and productive processes have clearly changed and developed since the early twentieth century, but quality was always, and is still, of excellence in the industry.
In fact, on the Apuan Alps and in Vagli they extract Calacatta Gold marble, one of the most refined and valued marble types for ornamental finish elements.
Amongst the illustrious examples of its use stands one of the most beautiful rooms of the Vatican, designed by Pierluigi Nervi.
The quarries are now owned by cooperatives and private companies.
The Arnetola museum
In Arnetola you can find the marble quarrying Museum, witnessing the sociologic transition from an economy that was relied on the exploitation of pastoral and agricultural resources to a mainly industrial economic model founded on technological development.
